Cost: $1450 CAD + Flights
Participation fee includes airport pick-up, orientation, accommodation, meals, and 24/7 in-country support

Trip Overview:

In Guatemala nearly 70% of Mayan children face chronic malnutrition, which is one of the highest rates of malnutrition in the world.
During this trip we will be visiting the indigenous communities of Bolonco and Las Arrugas, where SOS has previously funded the construction of two school kitchens, to support nutritional education and health promotion for local students.

Itinerary Highlights:
  • Meet with nutritional experts to understand the challenges and opportunities related to diet and nutrition in the region
  • Support coordination of Nutritional and Fitness Assessments for youth and deliver educational workshops
  • Work with local youth to plan and prepare meals, while participating in cross-cultural dialogues on the topics of food, nutrition, and fitness.
  • Support the planting and cultivation of school orchards to increase food security

This trip is ideal for those interested in global health, nutrition, student wellness, food security, and community development.

Community Profile:

Las Arrugas and Bolonco are small rural villages located in the Alta Verapaz department of Guatemala. The population is predominantly Indigenous and have faced many years of poverty, marginalization and violence leading to several development challenges. One of the main concerns in this region is the significant disparities in social well-being and malnutrition among children. This has lead to negative impacts on school participation and learning outcomes within these communities. SOS has held previous outreach trips in these communities and hopes to continue to build on progress made improving the lives and well being of the local people here.
